Workshop Sustainable Performance Organizations: how IT can contribute to sustainability

We need to make the change! However, organizations need to balance between (short-term) financial targets and sustainability. Incorporating “true” costs in decision-making is essential. This Sustainable Performance Organizations program will provide actionable guidance on how Information Technology can contribute to sustainability.

The guidance will go beyond green Information Technology and greening by Information Technology. This study will help Chief Sustainability Officers and Chief Information Officers, as well as Chief Digital Officers and Chief Technology Officers, to understand each other’s needs and enable to explore opportunities for their organizations jointly. In the context of legislation, such as CSRD, the role of the Chief Financial Officer and risk management will be addressed in the report.

In the upcoming session on 18 January, we will start exploring the following points:

1. How to set sustainability priorities?
2. The need for robust sustainability reporting platforms – e.g., replacing Excel spreadsheets, as well as addressing measuring challenges
3. Impact of (and responsibility for) data quality – in the context of the large volumes of unstructured data that need to be processed for the sustainability reporting
4. Is ethical use of data a topic that is owned by the Chief Sustainability Officer? Most likely not; nevertheless, input from the Chief Sustainability Officer for the data rule board is welcome
5. How to procure sustainable IT services and IT devices? Defining and weighting of sustainability criteria – 50%?
6. What capabilities are required to leverage Information Technology in driving sustainability?
7. How to deal with current sustainability legislation and anticipate future sustainability legislation?

We will start the afternoon with a short presentation by Erik Beulen, a professor at Manchester University, in which he will provide an overview of KPIs for green Information Technology and an overview of best practices for greening by Information Technology. After that, we will explore one or more use cases!
